Causes of Vertigo
Vertigo can be peripheral vertigo (due to inner ear pathology) or central vertigo (due to pathologies in the brainstem or in the cerebellum). Hence, the causes of vertigo also differ!
Causes of Peripheral Vertigo:
- Benign Paroxysmal Peripheral vertigo
- Acute vestibular neuritis
- Vestibular migraine
- Meniere's disease
- Damage to the vestibular apparatus due to drugs or Toxins
- The vestibular artery infarction
Causes of Central Vertigo:
Any lesion that involves the brainstem or cerebellum can cause central vertigo. Those are:
- Stroke or TIA (Transient vertigo)
- Cervical artery dissection
- Space occupying lesions
- Demyelinating lesions (e.g. MS)
- Infections
